2015 WaterTribe Everglades Challenge and UM Events Terminated

News Release

Coast Guard terminates Water Tribe Everglades Challenge near Englewood, Fla.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard is scheduled to terminate the WaterTribe Everglades Challenge near Englewood, Florida, due to safety of life at sea concerns Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg have coordinated the rescue of more than 11 people from the water during the small-craft regatta, which started in Tampa Bay, Florida, and ends in Key Largo, Florida. There has been reports of people with various stages of hyperthermia and the weather on scene continues to deteriorate to 4-foot seas and 20-knot winds.

The Coast Guard will terminate the event at the first check point at Cape Haze Marina in Englewood.
"Our number one concern is safety of life at sea," said Chief Petty Officer Rob Davis, a search and rescue coordinator at the sector. "With the weather deteriorating quickly, no manifest provided to the Coast Guard and unknown safety spotters on scene, we will unfortunately have to terminate the event."

Crews from Coast Guard Cutter Hawk, Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg, Coast Guard Station Cortez, Florida, and Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida, are on scene and will continue to provide an escort and search and rescue support until termination is complete.

March Madness!! EC kicks off this am

Team Kruger aka - Krugerheads saddle up for the running of the 2015 Everglades Challenge this morning; it's a mystery where and what happened last night at the campground EC mixer, I can neither confirm or deny the shenanigans, sea faring tales or alcohol shared - police reports are sketchy.

Kruger canoes with a multitude of sail configurations; the herd gathers edging ever so close to the high water mark on the beach; tic toc, tic toc... chief's epic skipper's meeting in 5!!

Ben sporting the 2015 Kruger spring wear the vortex tie-dye says it all; calibrate your compass dude and at some point share with the team the new sail rig configuration. Looking good!!

Chief gives the pre-race mandatory briefing; the do's don'ts and what if's are shared; trusted Flat Sally at his side gives hope to those that are one dimensional in their approach to the event; paddle, sail, row - crawl if you have to, but don't give up; there is always one more thing you can do!!

Adventure On .
