Bushwhacker update 10

 2:45pm est

Brian Keel snaps a quick shot of Dan Smith as they just pass Hwy 127; it is a scorcher out there especially so early in the year. Paddling to shade is a motivator, resting and keeping hydrated a must.

 2:39pm est
Jack taken a short  break it is a scorcher. I'm not sure us on lookers really understand how tough this event is.  I tried getting up off the couch 25 times in a an hour and I am pooped; throw in the hot skillet of the Maple, whew, a man has to know his limitations.

3:18pm est
Michael Doty our man in the "Bush" doing some field reporting states that Mike and Bruce are at Shepardsville Bridge; Mike has had the hiccups for a while and a sour stomach to boot. Michael Doty hopefully can get his some electrolytes as he is down to just pure water and paying dearly.

11:12am est

Bruce taking a break under the Sheppardsville bridge on the way to Elsie; Appears he got seperated from from George and Mike who pushed on.

Mike and George took to high ground and are portaging the boats on a train bed along hwy 21, trying to avoid a heap of timber in what they are calling grid-lock.

7:10am est

Mark reports doing an up and over dragging boats and gear over a big log jam, the Maple river has high banks and little wiggle room; next on the agenda, knocking on doors and getting some water; it's going to be a big day of bushwhacking.

5:30am  - Mark reports:

Wicked hot yesterday, the sun really zapped the energy reserves; going through a lot of water and definitely sore.  Beaten down like a red headed stepchild, he's coming back for more; Mark states he will push forward hoping to get up to the portage today. Jack is with Mark.

Bushwhacker update 6

5-19-12 late evening call

George reports that Mike Doty is pulling out and may re-join them tomorrow; It is my understanding Mike is dealing with some discomfort in his leg due to the heat and humidity.

Mike Smith reports they got in about 50 miles today; 15 hours of baking under a blazing sun; a sleep pad only sort of night, laying under the stars and wondering --- "What the hell was I thinking?"  Looks like Bruce Mike and George are all camped together.

Bushwhacker update 5

5-19-12 6:50pm

Bruce Mike and George just checked in at the Maple Rapids; grabbing some snacks and Gatorade.  HOT out there for a May paddle, re-applying lots of sunscreen.

Bushwhacker Sprint update

Jason Kruger reports:

5-19-12 4:17pm

Jason finished the Bushwhacker Sprint 11:15am and Carl Cole finished 11:30am; Todd Cesar and Scott Smith finished at 12:35pm.  A bit of confusion as  others got out on the otherside of the dam and he did not get to talk with them.

Bushwhacker update 4

12:18pm est

Bob Wiess sporting a QCC 400 called in; made it past the 3 portage on the Grand River.  In other news, Lisa Marie Presley, the 'Princess' of Rock and Roll, is done fighting the legacy of her father Elvis.  She is embracing her Americana roots, finding her own voice, and carving a niche for herself in the musical spotlight with new album "Storm and Grace," out this week.  Kinda like Toby in the dark on the Manistee , just trying to find his way.

Mark offers counsel; we hear they go better in the water; but who am I to say.
